The eleven locks

Discover an exceptional site, a remarkable example of human engineering.

A technical feat

How to allow boats to cross 27 meters of difference in level? By building a succession of 11 locks over a little more than 2km, that is to say, one every 200m on average, a real water elevator! This unusual spectacle can be witnessed in Hédé-Bazouges, a small town on the banks of the Ille et Rance canal, where the locks are still operated manually and each one has its own Napoleonic-style lockhouse and its own name: la Ségerie, la Malabrie, la Pechetière, la Charbonnerie, la Parfaire, la maison numéro 26, la Jaunaie, la Madelaine, la petite Madeleine, la Guéhardière, la Dialais. To discover more about the site and its works, the best thing to do is to visit the Maison du Canal. Exhibitions and different models retrace the history of the canal and the locks;

Walking along the water

Following the towpath that runs on either side of the canal, a bucolic walk awaits you to enjoy the perspective of the locks and the surrounding nature. By bike, the greenway and the walking paths, very popular in fine weather, will allow you to ride along the canal and enjoy pretty stops at the water’s edge. By kayak or boat, you can also take a trip to Rennes or Dinan, and one thing is sure, this unique site will seduce you!
