The mysterious soul!

From Saint-Domineuc to Hédé-Bazouges, passing by Tinténiac… the canal is the ideal place to stroll, walk, bike or kayak. Added to this bucolic setting are ponds and rivers, real natural treasures. Nearby, take the opportunity to admire the remarkable churches of Cardroc, les Iffs, Saint-Brieuc-des-Iffs, Québriac… true nuggets of the territory. Go in pursuit of this green diamond.

1.

The Ille-et-Rance Canal

In 1804, construction began on a canal that was almost destined for you. Of course, at that time, it was a strategic decision of Napoleon Bonaparte in reaction to a maritime blockade by the English: it was planned to carry goods between Rennes and Saint-Malo. Then, at the beginning of the 20th century, the railroad and the roads put an end to its first life. It now has a very different vocation: to transport emotions!

The 11 locks

Witness an unusual spectacle and proof of a true technical feat: over 2 kilometers, 11 locks follow one another every 200 meters, allowing boats to cross 27 meters of difference in level. Activated manually by the lock keepers, share the adventure of these modern day bargemen. This site promises a unique walk along the water, whether on foot, by bike, by kayak or by boat.

La Rigole de Boulet

Long of 14 km, the Rigole de Boulet, built the hands of the man feeds for nearly 200 years the Canal d’Ille-et-Rance. It represents the ideal place to go for a walk on the paths, in the shade of the trees and in the heart of the green landscapes. Take a moment to stroll along the water’s edge.

La Maison du Canal

Discover the secrets of the site of the 11 locks by visiting the Magdeleine lock house. Relive the history of the locks and the Ille-et-Rance canal from its construction to the present day through the models and learn more about the heritage through the exhibitions. For the youngest, playful and interactive animations promise an instructive journey through time.

The religious heritage

The twisted bell tower of Québriac : Unusual : Make a stop in the village and stop to admire the church of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul. It has one of the rare twisted bell towers in Europe : built in the 17th century, the bell tower is not twisted, but really twisted by an 8th of a turn ! A surprising discovery for the architecture lovers ! The church of Saint-Ouen, built in the 15th century, is of flamboyant gothic style. Its stained glass windows illustrate the art of stained glass in the 16th century. The church is one of the few to have a parish enclosure.

La Route du lin et du Chanvre

Go back in time to the era of the weavers by crossing the communes of Iffs, Cardroc and Saint-Brieuc-des-Iffs. A stroll awaits you around the link and hemp.
